On November 16, 2019, a Kenya Medical Training College student found herself in trouble after she extorted Sh20,000 from her parents by lying that she had been kidnapped.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the student called her brother and informed him that she had been abducted and the kidnappers were demanding Sh20,000 to secure her release.

Her brother immediately sent the money to her phone, but the phone was then switched off.

Detectives tracked the phone number and found the student at a party being held at the Thika Road Mall (TRM) in Nairobi.

She was found in full party mode, accompanied by her boyfriend and a group of university students.

When contacted, the boyfriend was asked to record a statement with the police on the matter.

Police said the student immediately switched on her phone and called her mother, saying she had just been dropped at Galleria Mall in Karen.

At the time of her arrest, the Sh20,000 was still in her M-Pesa account.
