On November 16, 2019, the Kenya Bankers Association hosted the 2019 edition of the Sustainable Finance Initiative (SFI) Catalyst award, celebrating players in the banking sector for their impact in finance, society, and sustainable economy.

CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge delivered the keynote speech, highlighting the banking sector's role in promoting sustainable livelihoods for Kenyans. He emphasized the sector's responsibility towards Kenyans, stating, 'We must not fail Kenyans. It is because of them that the banking sector exists. Let us press ahead with sustainable finance that works for and with Kenyans.'

The governor also urged banks to focus on green finance, prioritizing sustainable development in their activities. He noted, 'There is a need for firms in the finance sector to balance their business goals with socio-environmental and economic concerns. Therefore, banks should mainstream their operations with the future in mind.'

The SFI Catalyst Awards recognized several banks for their commitment to sustainable finance. Cooperative Bank was crowned the overall winner, while Equity Bank won the most innovative bank in Kenya. KWFT was recognized as the most improved bank in working towards sustainability.
