On a sunny Saturday in Njoro, Nakuru County, Egerton University played host to the Seeds of Gold Farm Clinic, a gathering of agriculture experts and farmers seeking to enhance food security through technology and innovation.

Published on November 16, 2019, the event drew tens of farmers and agro-dealers from across the country, including Nakuru, Nairobi, Kiambu, Narok, Bungoma, Makueni, Nandi, Kericho, Embu, Siaya, Busia, Trans Nzoia, Murang'a, and Kakamega.

The event's theme, 'Enhancing food security through technology and innovation,' sparked lively discussions among the attendees, who sought answers to pressing questions affecting their agribusinesses.

One of the key issues raised was the prevalence of aflatoxin in maize, wheat, and animal feeds, which has been linked to an increase in cancer cases. Joshua Kering, a farmer from Njoro, lamented that every year, a significant portion of his maize is declared unfit for consumption due to aflatoxin.

Dr. Meshack Obonyo, a researcher in biochemistry at Egerton University, advised farmers to adopt safe post-harvest practices, including proper drying and storage of grains using improved storage bags.

Other topics discussed included heat failure in cattle, milk production, and intercropping with sugar cane. Experts from Egerton University and other organizations provided valuable insights and advice to the farmers, who left the event with a memorable and wholesome experience.

The Seeds of Gold Farm Clinic was sponsored by several organizations, including Elgon Kenya Ltd, OCP-Kenya, ISUZU EA, CMC Motors, Toyota Kenya, Coopers K-Brands, Cosmos Ltd, Eprod Solutions Limited, Sidai Africa, SeedCo, and East Africa Breweries Ltd.
