On November 15, 2019, a bizarre incident unfolded at the Thika Road Mall (TRM) in Kenya, where a 19-year-old student from the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) was arrested at a party.
According to detectives, the student had called her brother, claiming she had been kidnapped and was being held for ransom. She allegedly told her brother that her kidnappers were demanding Ksh. 20,000 for her release.
However, forensic trails led detectives to the party venue at TRM, where they found the student. Upon arrest, it was discovered that the Ksh. 20,000 was still in her M-Pesa account.
The student's boyfriend and a group of university students were also arrested at the party. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that the student's brother had sent the money to her phone after which it was switched off.
