Published on November 15, 2019, a Kenyan daily newspaper revealed that Mama Ngina Kenyatta, the spouse of Kenya's founding father, receives a monthly state salary of Sh 568,218.

Her handlers have responded to the social media uproar over her salary, stating that she deserves more from Kenyans, considering her status as the country's mother.

According to her handlers, Mama Ngina's salary is tied to the 2003 Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, which provides for the spouse of a sitting or retired president to be paid 40% of the current salary of the sitting head of state.

They also claim that her salary is exempt from tax, as per the Presidential Retirement Benefits Acts of 2003.

However, this has not gone down well with many Kenyans, who argue that the amount could be used to employ 20 or so unemployed youths.

One social media user, @MaryAnnWanguiKE, tweeted, 'So the former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta receives KSh.568,218 monthly for doing absolutely nothing? si this amount of money can employ 20 jobless Kenyans? Ksh 28,410 each.'
