On November 15, 2019, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala was suspended by the Amani National Congress (ANC) party for supporting Imran Okoth in the Kibra by-election.

Malala argued that he supported Okoth based on the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition's statute, which allows members to support candidates from affiliate parties.

However, a letter from the ANC party's disciplinary committee, signed by Chairperson Yare Mohammed, stated that Malala's actions were against the party's laws and statute.

Malala claimed that he had not received any official communication from the ANC party regarding his suspension.

On the other hand, Nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi defended Malala, terming the suspension as 'a big joke of the year.'

Osotsi, who was also suspended from the ANC party in March 2019 for alleged misuse of party funds, stated that the party's actions were a 'cheap intimidation tactic' that eroded the party's leader's political capital and public image.
