On Friday, November 15, 2019, Kenya's Angela Okutoyi made history by becoming the only Kenyan to reach the finals of the International Tennis Federation juniors' tournament. She defeated Celine Simunyu of Ireland in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, at the Nairobi Club.
Okutoyi's impressive performance marked a significant milestone for Kenyan tennis, as she became the first Kenyan player to reach the finals of the tournament. Her counterparts, Alicia Owegi, Britney Chebet, Mara Vigada, Raamesh Poojari, Roselida Asumwa, and Shania Gadhia, were eliminated in the first and second rounds.
Okutoyi will face off against Burundi's Aisha Niyonkuru in the final on Saturday. Meanwhile, Kenya's Ryan Ateto came close to reaching the final but was defeated by Burundi's Shakul Kabur in the semi-finals.
Other Kenyan players, including Wycliffe Okenye, Sethia Shubh, Raymond Oduor, Edmond Ogega, Kennedy Musembi, Maxwell Ondiek, and Derrick Ominde, Liberty Kibue, Sahib Chana, and Brandon Sagala, were eliminated in the early rounds.
Okutoyi's victory was a testament to her skill and determination, as she overcame a challenging first set to emerge victorious. Her strong forehand swings and double-handed backhanded stabs proved to be too much for Simunyu, who is currently ranked 1500 in the world.
