The Keringet road race, set to take place on November 30, 2019, in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, aims to identify and nurture talent in the region.
The race will feature two categories: a 15km race for men and women, with the winner pocketing Sh100,000, and a 10km race for men and women, with the top three finishers taking home Sh50,000, Sh30,000, and Sh10,000 respectively.
The race will end at the proposed Keringet Sports Academy High Altitude Training Complex, a 20-acre facility that will be commissioned next year by Lee Governor Kinyanjui at a cost of Sh50 million.
Keringet has a rich history of producing world-class athletes, including World Marathon Champion Geoffrey Kirui and Olympic 1,500m champion Faith Chepng'etich.
Speaking at the launch of the race at the county headquarters, Athletics Kenya (AK) official Jepta Rono expressed optimism about the event's potential, saying, 'Keringet is the home of champions and there is no reason why this race cannot be upgraded into a full marathon to attract local and international runners.'
Rono also highlighted the need for the county government to allocate funds to host a full marathon, possibly between May and June 2020, and urged the county assembly to support sports by pushing for more budgetary allocation.
