Published on November 15, 2019, a report by Citizen TV revealed a brewing scandal involving the Kenyan football team Harambee Stars and their unpaid hotel bills in Cairo.

The team's players were left stranded due to the unpaid bills, with the Sports ministry and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) trading accusations over the issue.

FKF officials, led by Nick Mwendwa, claimed that they had sent an invoice of $40,000 (Ksh. 4 million) to the ministry to cover the team's accommodation costs.

However, the ministry questioned the invoice, citing that it lacked an address or account number where the money would be paid to.

FKF officials insisted on having the money wired through them, claiming that they had spent their own resources to facilitate the team.

But an independent inquiry by Citizen TV's Sports desk revealed that the actual cost of accommodating the team would be significantly lower, at most $18,800 (Ksh. 1.9 million) if all players and officials were to get a room each, or Ksh. 1.35 million if rooms were shared between two players and each official got their own room.

Despite the troubles, Harambee Stars still managed to face off with the Pharaohs in a match that ended in an impressive draw for Kenya.
