November 15, 2019, marked a day of controversy for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who found himself at the center of a social media storm after appearing to 'like' an Instagram post calling for manager Unai Emery to be sacked.
Martinez, 27, was on international duty with Argentina at the time, but eagle-eyed fans spotted the post from 'afc.talk' which stated 'Like for Emery out' and had nearly 13,000 likes, including Martinez's.
However, after fans pointed out the incident, Martinez quickly unliked the post, suggesting it may have been unintentional. Nevertheless, the controversy has sparked a heated debate among fans, with some expressing their disappointment and frustration at Martinez's actions.
One fan commented on Reddit, 'I'm no longer willing to give the benefit of the doubt to any player who does this, even if it's our own. It's clearly on purpose.' Another added, 'A bit embarrassing if he's done that on purpose tbf. Be professional.'
Martinez has been out on loan several times in recent years, including a spell at Reading last season, but has returned to the fold under Emery this season. Despite playing second fiddle to Bernd Leno in the Premier League, he has featured regularly in other competitions, starting all four Europa League games and keeping two clean sheets.
