On November 15, 2019, the Amani National Congress (ANC) party announced the suspension of Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala as a member, effective November 14, 2019.
The party cited a violation of its governing rules, as Senator Malala had campaigned for and worn merchandise marked with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) initials.
According to ANC, the National Disciplinary Committee had deliberated the Senator's attire and the address he gave during an ODM rally, deciding that his conduct merited punishment.
ANC's letter stated, "In the said rally, Mr Malala, donning an ODM cap, addressed the rally to support of the ODM candidate while so derogatorily campaigning against his (and our) own candidate for the Kibra parliamentary seat."
Furthermore, the letter read, "The NDC has decided to suspend Mr Cleopas Malala from the membership of ANC party summarily, with immediate effect,"
