On November 15, 2019, Prof. Peter Mbithi, the immediate former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, attempted to visit Deputy President William Ruto at his official residence in Karen, but was denied entry.
Prof. Mbithi's tenure as VC was marred by controversy, including awarding a multi-million shilling security tender to Lavington Security Company, associated with Ruto's ally.
When Prof. Mbithi introduced himself as the VC of UoN, the security team dismissed him, citing instructions not to allow him in, allegedly due to Ruto's reluctance to intervene on his behalf and potentially rub State House the wrong way.
Prof. Mbithi has since claimed that he was forced to contribute sh400,000 from the university's coffers towards Ruto's 2017 presidential campaign, only to be abandoned and left without a contract renewal.
