Published on November 15, 2019, clan rivalry in Gusii politics has reached a boiling point ahead of the 2022 elections. Kisii county gubernatorial candidate Ezekiel Machogu has vowed to finish Senator Sam Ongeri, who is also eyeing the gubernatorial seat.

Machogu, the MP for Nyaribari Masaba, has accused the Bogetutu clan of enriching themselves from county resources and vowed to give them a chance to step down. He claims that the other clans have been kept at bay, waiting for their turn despite massively voting for their man twice.

During the 2007 general elections, Ongeri outsmarted Machogu, who was riding on the ODM euphoria, and sent him to the political cold for 10 years. Machogu has now launched his campaigns, hosting delegates from various clans, including the Nyaribari, Bonchari, and Bomachoge clans.

Political observers have criticized Machogu for sidelining the Abagetutu clan, which has a rich history of leadership in the region. The clan has a significant presence in the area, and their support is crucial for any candidate.

Other candidates vying for the gubernatorial seat include Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka, Kisii county women representative Janet Ong'era, and former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara. Deputy governor Joash Maangi from the neighbouring Bomachoge clan has also thrown his hat into the ring.
