On November 8, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Liberian Vice President Jewel Taylor signed a declaration to end female genital mutilation (FGM) at a meeting at State House in Nairobi.

Ms Taylor commended President Kenyatta for his efforts to mobilize opinion leaders from 22 counties, including elders, to achieve the goal of ending FGM by 2022.

"It has been a long journey involving all stakeholders. We are glad it bore fruits with the signing of the declaration," President Kenyatta said.

During their meeting, the two leaders also discussed ways to alleviate unemployment in Africa. President Kenyatta emphasized the need for countries to pool their resources and jointly pursue opportunities in the international market.

"This would enable Africa to get the best from its resources through interlinking the infrastructure networks of our countries to allow free movement and interaction of people," he said.

Ms Taylor was in Nairobi to attend the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD25), where she also visited the Kazuri Beads Factory in Karen, which empowers local women by making handmade beads and ornaments for sale.
