Published on November 15, 2019, Migori Deputy Governor Nelson Mahanga has resurfaced after a year-long absence, sparking speculation about his relationship with Governor Okoth Obado.
Mr Mahanga's absence from office began in October 2018, but he has now made technical appearances at the county headquarters.
During a recent visit to Awendo sub-county, Mr Mahanga presided over the swearing-in of municipal board members and reiterated his commitment to supporting Governor Obado in overseeing county activities.
His return coincides with the detention of Governor Obado over the alleged murder of 26-year-old Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
Mr Mahanga dismissed rumors of a fallout with Governor Obado, stating that he had been ill since January and had not been in a position to defend his boss.
"I have been sick for some time and have not been in public limelight to defend my brother and boss Obado from attack. Those spreading rumours of a fallout with my boss should get their records clear. I have never been at loggerheads with the governor," he said.
Mr Mahanga also called on local leaders to support Governor Obado's development agenda, urging them to allow the governor to deliver on his pledges.
He emphasized the importance of unity among the different ethnic communities in Migori, stating that Governor Obado's government plans to upgrade Kehancha and Isebania towns, among others, and that he would support the governor in these efforts.
