Published on November 15, 2019, a report by the Business Daily shed light on the taxpayer-funded salary of Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

According to the report, Mama Ngina receives a tax-free monthly salary of Sh. 568,218, courtesy of the taxpayer.

The salary is exempt from tax under the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act of 2003, which states that a surviving spouse of a former President is entitled to 50% of the pension their spouse would have earned if they were alive.

As the surviving spouse of founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who passed away in 1978, Mama Ngina's monthly payment is made in her capacity as a surviving spouse.

The revelation has sparked criticism that the Kenyatta family has benefited significantly from the Uhuru presidency, despite the country's deteriorating economy.
