On November 14, 2019, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta paid a courtesy call to his Somali counterpart, Mohamed Farmaajo, at a city hotel in Nairobi. The meeting came after Farmaajo's participation in the International Conference on Population Development.

During their talks, the two leaders recommitted to normalizing relations between Kenya and Somalia, which have been strained in recent months due to a diplomatic row over a maritime delimitation dispute pending at the International Court of Justice.

Kenya had successfully applied to have hearings on the case deferred to allow the State Law Office time to recruit a defense counsel. The dispute has been a major point of contention between the two countries, with Somalia accusing Kenya of violating its airspace in October.

According to Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kenyatta and Farmaajo agreed to enhance relations regardless of the outcome in the maritime delimitation case filed by Somalia.
