Published on November 15, 2019, a Nairobi man's heartbreaking story came to light in court as he pleaded for leniency in a case against him.
Edward Mwiti, a father of four, told Chief Magistrate Roslyne Oganyo that he had nowhere to go and depended on his 90-year-old grandmother, Jennifer Kailentu, for food and shelter.
According to Mwiti, his father's one-sided love for his mother led to his father abandoning him, forcing him to grow up with his grandmother in Meru County.
He further revealed that he got married to Salome Kinya in 2012, but the marriage ended in separation, leaving him with four children.
Speaking in court, Mwiti said, 'I don't know my real dad, but when I was young my mother fell in love with a man who only loved her but openly rejected me.'
He also stated, 'Your honor, I got married but we latter separated my wife due to marital issues, she ran away from me, then I was forced to move back to my grandmothers house together with my four children.'
Mwiti was charged with disposing refuse in Nairobi's Ladhis road contrary to the law on November 5, 2019. He pleaded guilty to the offence.
Chief Magistrate Oganyo advised Mwiti to reconcile with his wife, stating that he and his four children were a big burden to his grandmother.
As a result, Mwiti was sentenced to six months' probation.
