On November 14, 2019, a devastating shooting occurred at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, leaving two students dead and three others injured.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reported that a 16-year-old male student, who was also a suspect, opened fire in the school's quad just after 7:30 a.m. using a.45-caliber semiautomatic pistol.

According to Captain Kent Wegener, the shooting was captured on video, and there were no more bullets in the gun when it was recovered.

One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, shared that he first learned of the shooting when one of his sons called him, and his other son texted him that he and other classmates had barricaded themselves in a classroom.

Several students, including sophomore Samuel Arreaza, 15, stated that they had prepared for the possibility of a shooting with in-school drills, saying, 'I grew up knowing this is a thing that happens.'
