On November 15, 2019, Harambee Stars defied poor preparations and injury setbacks to hold Pharaohs of Egypt 1-1 away in Alexandria in a thrilling 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers opener.

Michael Olunga netted the all-important goal in the 67th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by Pharaohs' captain Ahmed Fathi, who was under pressure in his own box after being dispossessed by Cliff Nyakeya.

Pharaohs' Mahmoud Abdelhamid Soliman had opened the scoring in the 41st minute, taking advantage of a miscalculated back-pass by Lawrence Juma, who was making his debut in the senior team.

Despite playing away from home, Harambee Stars showed bravery and could have snatched a win, with Ayub Timbe being denied in the 22nd minute by the Egyptian goalie after dancing his way past several markers.

Coach Francis Kimanzi made several substitutions due to injuries, including bringing on Ian Otieno and Cliff Nyakeya, who both made significant contributions to the team's performance.

The match was marked by several near-misses, including a free-kick by Nyakeya that hit the wall and a shot by Olunga that bounced out for a corner.

Kenya thus secured an important away point ahead of their next match against Togo, while Comoros topped the group after beating Togo 1-0 in the other match.
