Residents of Nairobi have raised concerns about groups of people claiming to be running promotions around the National Archives, with some accusing them of being thugs licensed by City Hall to rob locals.
According to Joseph Kimani, who lost his mobile phone to one such group, the promoters typically arrive in a tinted Toyota Voxy or Noah at around 6am, accompanied by tens of people holding raffles.
Kimani claims that he was approached by a group of men who begged him to try his luck, and when he refused, they cornered him and he was forced to walk away. It was only later that he realized his phone was missing.
When he returned to the scene minutes later, Kimani was allegedly almost beaten up, and he has since learned that other people have also been duped or lost valuables to the pickpockets who operate around Odeon, Railways, Fire station, and Race course.
