On October 25, 2019, 31-year-old Joyce Syombua and her two children, Shanice Maua and Prince Michael, visited her estranged partner Major Peter Mugure at the Laikipia Airbase in Nanyuki.
According to Major Mugure's statement to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), he picked his partner and children from the Nanyuki main stage and they spent the night at the Airbase.
However, Joyce's friend Farizana Syombua reported that Joyce messaged her at 9:30 am on October 25, stating they were having breakfast. Two hours later, Joyce messaged Farizana again, saying her husband had taken the children on a tour of the base.
A court had ordered Major Mugure to pay maintenance costs for his children after DNA tests confirmed their link.
Major Mugure claims he received an emergency call and escorted Joyce to the Nanyuki main stage for a trip back to Nairobi. However, according to Farizana's statement, Major Mugure never returned with the children after taking them for a tour.
Police are awaiting call log details from Joyce's phone to determine the next step in the investigation. Joyce's phone was found on Sunday, October 27, in a matatu belonging to 4NTE Sacco in Nanyuki.
Family members are urging the police to fast-track their investigation and find out where their missing loved ones are.
