On November 13, 2019, a memo was sent by Kenya Pipeline official W.K. Ruto to the acting managing director Hudson Andambi and other senior officials, warning of a reported case of water contamination at the Embakasi (Pipeline Staff Quarters) Estate.
The memo stated that a number of estate residents were affected, with some seeking medical treatment in various city hospitals.
Kenya Pipeline had reached out to other state bodies concerned with health and water supply to assist in testing and finding the cause of contamination, including Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, Mukuru Health Clinic, and their town clinic.
Residents in the affected area were advised to stop using tap water and seek immediate treatment in case they experienced diarrhoea and related symptoms.
Kenya Pipeline also stated that its clinical officers were ready to assist any affected cases and would work with the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company to supply clean water to affected residents.
Deputy Public Health Officer Wilson Langat confirmed the case of contamination, stating that it occurred when water from a sewer seeped into a reservoir in the area.
Mr. Langat said that the contamination had affected a number of residents, but the exact number was unknown since they could have sought treatment at different hospitals.
