On November 14, 2019, a photo of Idris Sultani sitting on a chair with a national emblem went viral on social media, sparking a heated debate in Tanzania.
During an interview with journalists, Idris explained that he had not intended to mock the President, but the photo was misinterpreted.
"I have seen fit to apologize to the President publicly because I did not intend to offend him. My mistakes were made public, and that's why I've decided to take this step," Sultani said.
Idris was arrested and charged with publishing a photo that was deemed insulting to the President.
He had also posted another photo showing President Magufuli standing, wearing a pair of trousers with a flag emblem.
