On November 14th, 2019, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced its latest fuel price reviews, which saw significant changes in the prices of various fuels.
The authority increased the prices of Super petrol and Diesel by KSh0.28 per litre and KSh2.44 per litre respectively, effective from midnight on the same day.
However, kerosene prices took a different turn, with a decrease of KSh3.31 per litre in Nairobi. As a result, the new prices for Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene in Nairobi are KSh112.81, KSh103.04, and KSh100.64 respectively.
The changes in fuel prices can be attributed to the increased cost of import and the slight depreciation of the Kenyan shilling relative to the US dollar.
According to EPRA, the diesel cost increased by 4.38%, while kerosene prices decreased by 5.61%. Additionally, the monthly mean of the US dollar to Kenya shilling exchange rate depreciated by 0.13%.
The new fuel prices are inclusive of an 8% Value Added Tax and are in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2018 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 109 of 9th July 2019.
