Published on November 14, 2019, research has shown that birth control pills can have several benefits beyond preventing pregnancy.

One of the most significant advantages of oral contraceptives is their ability to make periods more comfortable. The hormones in these pills work to prevent pregnancy while also moderating miserable period symptoms, including heavy bleeding, cramps, acne, and menstrual migraines.

However, experts warn that certain medications, such as antibiotics, can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. This is because these medications can break down the pills faster than normal, potentially causing a lapse in protection.

To mitigate this risk, individuals taking antibiotics while on the pill are advised to use condoms or another form of backup contraception.

Interestingly, oral contraceptives have also been found to lower the risk of certain diseases, including ovarian cancer and arthritis. Additionally, by reducing blood loss caused by heavy periods, the pill can help prevent iron deficiency anemia.

Contrary to popular myth, long-term use of birth control pills is not necessarily bad for fertility. In fact, individuals only need to consult with their doctor to determine when to stop taking the pill.
