Nanyuki Woman and Two Children Vanish After Visiting Estranged Soldier ¶
On October 26, 2019, Joyce Syombua and her two children, 10-year-old Shanice Maua and 5-year-old Prince Michael, were reported missing after visiting their estranged husband, Peter Mugure, a KDF soldier, at Nanyuki Barracks.
According to Elizabeth Malombe, Joyce's mother, the family had visited Peter in an attempt to respect a court ruling that granted him access to the children by taking them to him in Nanyuki.
However, the family was last seen boarding a matatu back to Nairobi, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
A cellphone belonging to Joyce was later discovered inside a matatu registered with 4NTE Sacco, raising more questions than answers.
Nanyuki DCIO Jacob Mureithi explained that the couple were not in good terms and that the three had gone to the Nanyuki stage with the aim of boarding a matatu back to Nairobi.
"The husband was only in good terms with the wife for sometime," Mureithi stated.
The driver attached to the sacco refuted claims of having ferried the Syombua and her children to Nairobi, stating that the vehicle was on private duty in Bomet County at the time.
"We do not ferry clients at night, the vehicle that brought Syombua's phone was on private duty in Bomet County," said the driver.
