On November 14, 2019, Mary Wanjiku, a 24-year-old from Nyandarua County, made history by becoming the first Kenyan to win the Messengers of Peace Heroes Award in Kuwait.

The award, sponsored by the World Organisation of Scout Movement, recognized Wanjiku's efforts in environmental conservation through her organization, Brown Olive.

Wanjiku, a senior scout and tour guide at Lake Nakuru National Park, has been educating locals on agroforestry and conservation of indigenous trees.

She received the Chief Scout Award from President Uhuru Kenyatta exactly one year before winning the global award.

Wanjiku plans to present the award to President Kenyatta at State House in Nairobi on November 24, which will also be the Awards Day for the Kenya Scouts Association.
