AFCON 2021 Qualifiers: Egyptian Government Bails Out Broke Harambee Stars

Published on November 14, 2019

The Egyptian government has come to the rescue of Harambee Stars, Kenya's national football team, after they were served with an eviction notice over unpaid bills ahead of their AFCON 2021 qualifier against Egypt.

According to reports, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) had failed to settle the team's accommodation bill, leading to the hotel management serving them with an eviction notice on Wednesday, November 13.

However, the Egyptian Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy intervened in the matter, footing the bill for the team's accommodation for one night.

FKF president Nick Mwendwa confirmed the development, stating that the team would have accommodation for the night courtesy of the Egyptian minister, but would have to settle the bill by the end of the day.

Speaking to the press, Mwendwa expressed his gratitude to the Egyptian government for their intervention, saying that it was a welcome relief for the team.

He also reiterated his commitment to pushing for better treatment of athletes by the government, stating that the current situation was unacceptable.

Stars will play Egypt in the opening group G qualifier, but it remains to be seen whether they will be able to find alternative accommodation for the rest of their stay in Cairo.
