Published on November 14, 2019, a tweet by Raila Junior Odinga, the youngest son of ODM leader Raila Odinga, has ignited a fierce online debate.
Junior expressed his desire for a bylaw to prohibit washing cars by the roadside in Lavington, citing the need for law and order, proper zoning, and safety standards.
He posted a photo of a young man washing a vehicle by the roadside and captioned it: “At the risk of sounding unpopular I wish there was a bylaw that made it illegal to wash your car at the roadside in #Lavington.”
Junior emphasized that adherence to laws and policies applies to everyone, regardless of privilege, and that Nairobi County is mandated to create safe car washing bays.
However, his tweet has been met with widespread criticism from Kenyans online, who argue that the proposed ban would unfairly target unemployed youth who rely on manual jobs like car washing to make a living.
Many users took to social media to express their discontent, with some accusing Junior of being out of touch with the struggles of the common man.
