Belinda Atieno, a 20-year-old Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate, died in Homa Bay County after battling sickle cell anaemia.
Atieno, a student at Nyawita Secondary School in Rangwe sub-county, succumbed on Tuesday night, November 12, 2019, at Matata Hospital in Oyugis town where she was rushed for medication.
According to the school Principal George Olueya, Atieno had been suffering from anaemia for many years, with her condition worsening at the beginning of the term.
She was forced to sit for her Tuesday exam papers at Nyawita Dispensary, where she was rushed that morning, but medics decided to refer her to Matata Hospital when her condition worsened that evening.
"Her condition began worsening at the beginning of this term," Olueya said.
Confirming the death, Rangwe sub-county Police Commander Jane Sang said, "Her body was moved to Matata Hospital mortuary for postmortem."
