On November 13, 2019, Kibra's newly elected legislator, Bernard Imran Okoth, made a bold promise to the constituency's youths: he would fight for the legalization of marijuana in Parliament.
Imran's late brother, Hon Ken Okoth, had been a vocal advocate for the legalization of marijuana, arguing that it would create opportunities for the youth and provide a source of income for many.
Imran has vowed to continue his brother's work, citing marijuana as a 'cash crop and employer to many people in his constituency, especially the youths.'
He plans to push for the decriminalization of marijuana handling and amnesty for those who have been prosecuted for using or growing the drug.
Imran also promises to regulate the marijuana farming sector to protect minors and ensure that growers and traders are catered for.
He believes that once legalized, marijuana will provide the government with a tax haven and create employment opportunities.
Imran has already begun his tenure with zeal, inspecting development projects initiated by his late brother and promising to deliver on all stalled projects and bills.
"My idea is to have a fully developed Kibra so that the future enjoys the gains that we would have built now," he remarked.
