On November 13, 2019, a group of striking nurses and clinical officers from the Kenya National Union of Nurses and the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers took their demonstrations to the doorstep of Governor Mike Sonko at City Hall.
They demanded to be given their promotion letters, which had reportedly been prepared in advance.
Acting Health Chief Administrative Secretary Veska Kangogo addressed the group at City Hall, but her message was met with resistance.
According to Kangogo, approximately 1,500 letters of promotion were ready, and about 2,153 medical staff had been promoted.
However, the nurses and clinical officers were not satisfied with Kangogo's response and continued to demand immediate action.
"We have already spoken to your leaders, let's agree that by Friday each one of you would have received letters of promotion, but we want you to resume your duties immediately," Kangogo said.
Meanwhile, at Pumwani Hospital, the administration was taking roll calls and threatening disciplinary action against those who refused to return to work.
Geoffrey Mosiria, the facility administrator, warned that those who were absent would be treated as absentees and their names would be sent to the Ministry of Health for further disciplinary action.
