Published on November 13, 2019, Mombasa Port, a central access point for East and Central Africa, handled 25.25 million tonnes of cargo between January and September 2019, a 9% increase from the same period in 2018.

According to Reuters, the port's increased cargo handling capacity and higher exports to neighboring countries, including Uganda, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Burundi, contributed to the growth.

Container traffic also surged by 10.7% to 1.06 million 20 feet equivalent units, while cargo transported to other countries rose by 136.8% to 1.87 million tons, up from 791,257 tonnes in the previous period of 2018.

The expansion of Mombasa Port in 2012, which included the addition of a new container terminal, allowed bigger vessels to access the port. The first phase of the project was inaugurated in 2016.

During the period January-September 2018/2019, the new container vessel handled 381,288 TEUs, accounting for 36% of the total container traffic handled in the port.

The Kenyan government also plans to build a second port in Lamu, with a capacity of 23 million tonnes per year.
