Published on November 13, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has launched a crackdown on parking cartels in the city's Central Business District.
According to Sonko, 'parking boys' have been extorting as little as Sh50 from motorists to allow them to park at reserved parking spaces, before warning them against paying the youth.
“Parking is Sh200 only. Just dial 235# and pay via your phone. Why pay a parking boy 100 bob then you end up paying clamping fee of Sh2500?” Sonko said.
The parking cartels, comprised of youth and security attendants, have been infiltrating Nairobi's CBD and its environs, demanding money from motorists to secure parking spots and watch over their vehicles.
Motorists who fail to comply have been subjected to harassment, denied parking space, or in worst case scenarios, their cars get vandalized.
However, Sonko has put together a 'patrol' team to help motorists who get harassed, bringing relief to those affected by the parking cartels.
