On November 13, 2019, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) released the names of three police officers who brutally beat a Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) student.
The officers, George Wathania, Jonathan Kibet, and Boniface Muthama, were suspended on Tuesday as the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) conducts investigations on the incident.
However, the NPSC noted that the fourth officer involved in the incident remains unidentified.
Police spokesman Charles Owino initially stated that the officers' names would be withheld out of sensitivity for their families, citing that revealing their names could lead to their children being mocked at school.
"If your child is in school and the father is revealed to have beat up somebody the other children will mock the child over and over," Owino explained.
Despite this, the NPSC ultimately decided to release the names of the three officers, with Owino adding that "what is most important is the action...we felt preliminarily we hold the names. Some of these officers have done very good things."
