Kenya Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, a High Court advocate and former Moi University lecturer, has landed himself in trouble with the law for disobeying a court order.

On October 17, 2019, Kapenguria High Court judge RN Sitati issued an order restricting Munya's appointments to the Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) until the case is heard.

However, Munya went ahead and introduced a new caretaker board to the KFA on September 24, 2019, in clear defiance of the court order.

The KFA wants the dissolution of the new board and the right to choose its own leaders, rather than having politicians select individuals with ties to them.

Mike Mwalati, a farmer, has instructed his lawyer to challenge Munya's suitability to hold public office under Chapter Six of the Constitution.

As a result of Munya's actions, the court contempt case against him will come up for pre-trial direction on November 14, 2019, at the Kapenguria High Court.

Kenya Farmers Association provides loans and farm inputs to farmers across the country, with 67 cooperatives operating nationwide and 33 operating below capacity.

This is not the first time the KFA has stopped the government from interfering with its affairs, with a similar case occurring in 1996 and another in 2003.
