On November 13, 2019, a group of youths participating in the cleanup of the Nairobi River made a disturbing discovery in the Korogocho section of the river.
The body of an infant was retrieved at the Korogocho KA village, near the bridge connecting Dandora and Korogocho, and was subsequently handed over to the police for further action.
According to Environment executive Veska Kangogo, the infant's body was one of 17 recovered from the river since the cleanup campaign was launched by Governor Mike Sonko in May last year.
Ms Kangogo urged the public to be humane, stating, "I want to urge our sisters, mothers and health practitioners to be humane. We cannot continue retrieving bodies of innocent babies every day."
The leader of the youths participating in the cleanup, Fredrick Okinda, described the body as fresh and found floating on the river with its umbilical cord still attached.
"It is traumatising and most of us are getting affected psychologically. Many children are also playing at the renovated Korogocho People's Park and the sight of the bodies affects them too," Mr Okinda said.
