On November 12, 2019, a video clip circulated on social media showing a Kenyatta University bus struggling to climb the steep ramp at the Likoni crossing channel after disembarking from a ferry.
The incident sparked concerns about ferry safety, particularly after a vehicle slid off the MV Harambee ferry and plunged 58 meters into the Indian Ocean in September, killing a mother and her daughter.
However, in a statement released on the same day, Kenya Ferry Services clarified that all passengers had alighted from the bus before it boarded the ferry.
According to the statement, the driver of the bus failed to negotiate the uphill momentum as it disembarked from the ferry at the mainland ramp.
The statement read, 'Our attention has been brought to a video clip circulating on social media platform depicting a Kenyatta University bus which failed to climb the ramp.'
Kenya Ferry Services further stated, 'The bus had no passengers since all passengers had alighted before boarding the ferry in compliance with our safety procedure.'
Consumers Federation of Kenya (COFEK) had earlier expressed concerns about the incident, tweeting, 'ANOTHER FERRY accident? A near tragic incident after Kenyatta University bus slid off the ramp #ConsumerVoice.'
