On November 11, 2019, a protest at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Juja, Kenya, turned violent when police officers clashed with students.
According to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), 50 police officers were deployed to quell the protest, and their identities have since been established.
Twenty-two students suffered injuries during the incident, and four police officers were caught on camera brutally beating a female student.
IPOA chairperson Anne Makori confirmed that the four officers have been interdicted and that the authority has taken statements from key eyewitnesses.
Ms. Makori stated, "Based on these preliminary findings, the authority now advances the matter into a full independent investigation with a view of unravelling all the facts of the matter."
The investigation will be conducted in accordance with the National Police Service Act, 2011, and appropriate recommendations will be made to the Director of Public Prosecutions and the National Police Service Commission.
