On November 13, 2019, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) board appointed George Njao as its new director general, succeeding Francis Meja whose term had expired.
NTSA's acting board chairman Dr. Alice Chesire highlighted Njao's extensive experience in the transport sector, particularly in safety management, which she believed presented a great opportunity for the authority.
Meja, the founding director general, is credited with setting up the NTSA, consolidating mandates previously undertaken by the Kenya Revenue Authority, Traffic Police, and the Transport Licensing Board.
Dr. Chesire mentioned that the board had initiated structural changes and made several internal appointments, including the review of the strategic plan and the implementation of new governance policies and procedures.
“A number of substantial changes have been initiated in the authority, among them the review of the strategic plan and a series of new internal governance, policies and procedures,” Dr. Chesire said.
“Mr. Njau will play a significant role in implementing these changes while at the same time bringing on board the vast experience he has acquired over the years,” she added.
As part of the new changes, Christopher Wanjau and Badu Katelo were appointed as the new directors of registration and licensing and road safety respectively, while Shalakha Shem was appointed as the deputy director for supply chain management.
