November 13, 2019, marked a significant development in the matatu-hailing industry in Nairobi as SWVL, a popular app, halted its services on most routes in the city.

The move comes after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) issued a directive to impound SWVL vehicles and charge its crew and owners for allegedly using a tour service licence for public service operations, which require a different permit.

According to sources, nearly all routes on the SWVL network were currently grounded, affecting thousands of commuters who relied on the service for comfort and convenience.

SWVL's General Manager, Shivachi Muleji, informed customers that the company was experiencing disruptions on some routes and was working closely with regulators to ensure compliance by the end of the month.

However, the disruptions have already affected Little shuttles, a competitor of SWVL, which suspended operations after the NTSA order.

Both services were popular among Nairobi's working class, who valued the comfort and convenience they offered.
