On November 7, 2019, Didmus Barasa, the Member of Parliament for Kimilili, was attacked by thugs in the Kibra constituency while casting his vote in a by-election.
According to Kimani Ichung'wah, the Member of Parliament for Kikuyu, Barasa was targeted by the thugs because he was suspected of trying to rig the election.
Ichung'wah accused his fellow MP, Simba Arati of Dagoretti, of hiring the thugs who attacked Barasa.
"They used thugs to intimidate our leaders and supporters so that they wouldn't turn out in large numbers to vote. My colleague, Didmus Barasa, is in South Africa receiving treatment after being beaten and strangled with a poisonous object by Simba Arati," Ichung'wah said.
Barasa was reportedly rushed to South Africa for treatment after suffering serious injuries from the attack.
Efforts by TUKO.co.ke to reach out to Barasa were unsuccessful as his phone was not receiving calls.
