On November 11, 2019, a disturbing video emerged of four police officers brutally beating a JKUAT student, sparking widespread condemnation from Kenyans.
Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai confirmed that the officers had been interdicted, stating that action had been taken against them for using excessive force.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i vowed action against officers who used excessive force, tweeting that firm and decisive action would be taken within the next 24 hours.
The incident occurred during a student protest over rising insecurity at JKUAT's Juja main campus, which led to the university's Senate ordering the closure of the institution indefinitely.
