Published on November 12, 2019, Rwanda is gearing up to introduce a new public transport system that will revolutionize the way passengers travel.
The new system, set to be rolled out next year, will allow passengers to control their travel times using mobile apps, making it easier for them to plan their journeys.
According to Emmanuel Asaba Katabarwa, the Head of Transport Department, the high-tech bus system will improve route planning, vehicle mix, and introduce a strict, scheduled service.
"This time we are using ICT to be able to control the drivers. By using GPS, we will see the activities of the buses, and see which one is delaying, and call them to ask them why they are delaying the passengers," Katabarwa said.
Timetables will be displayed on different websites, including that of the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA), making it easier for passengers to plan their journeys.
Transport fees for passengers are expected to reduce since operators will be able to operate their routes efficiently.
The system will also mark routes based on the volume of passengers using data from the automated fare collection system.
Routes in Kigali have been divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary, according to the number of passengers.
"We are working with partners who are developing apps that will give people information. For example, you will be able to know that the bus you need will arrive in the next ten minutes," Eng. Katabarwa said.
