JKUAT Student Beaten by Police Suspended

On November 12, 2019, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai ordered investigations into the incident, terming it unacceptable.

Four police officers who were captured on camera beating up a female Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology (JKUAT) student have been suspended.

Two of the officers in question have been identified to be from Makongeni and Juja police stations.

According to Mutyambai, the students had blocked Thika Superhighway causing obstruction of motorists using the busy road.

The institution has since been closed indefinitely pending investigations into the matter.

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai issued a statement indicating the officers were interdicted and further action will be taken against them.

"The national police service wishes to inform the public that the four officers who were caught on camera meting excessive force on a JKUAT student have been identified and consequently interdicted from service as per police procedures," Mutyambai said.

"Further action and other internal disciplinary processes will follow the recommendations from the Internal Affairs Unit investigations," Mutyambai added.
