Kenya Airways has faced criticism from the Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) over its decision to hire 20 foreign pilots, despite having qualified Kenyan pilots available for promotion.

According to KALPA, the move is a breach of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which states that the most suitable Kenyan pilot should be appointed whenever a vacancy occurs.

Secretary General Captain Murithi Nyaga argued that the decision is against the spirit of 'Kenyanization', which aims to promote local talent in the aviation industry.

He also pointed out that there are hundreds of unemployed Kenyan pilots who could be tapped to contribute to the growth of the national carrier.

Earlier this year, the pilots' union had threatened to go on strike over the decision to recruit expatriates, but later backed down.

However, the issue has resurfaced, with KALPA accusing Kenya Airways of prioritizing foreign pilots over local talent.

Kenya Airways Chief Executive Officer Sebastian Mikosz defended the decision, stating that it is a temporary measure to address the shortage of pilots.
