On November 11, 2019, a female student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology (JKUAT) was mercilessly clobbered by police officers during a protest by the varsity learners.
The students had blocked Thika Superhighway to demonstrate over insecurity, with some accusing police officers of sleeping on their job and partnering with criminals to rob them.
Two students had been stabbed, and many others attacked with knives and their gadgets confiscated, prompting the protest.
Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has swung into action and ordered immediate investigations on police officers who were captured on camera beating up the female student.
"Following the unfortunate incident, the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) has been directed to commence investigations and make recommendations for action within 24 hours. Any police officer found culpable will be held accountable," said Mutyambai.
At the same time, the police boss appealed to the law enforcers to ensure they carry out their duties with decorum and respect to humanity.
"Officers are further reminded that police action should never be punitive; It should focus on maintaining law and order, and processing offenders for court," he said.
