On Monday, Uganda Airlines made history with its inaugural direct flight from Entebbe, Uganda to Moi International Airport in Mombasa, a move that is expected to boost trade and tourism in the region.

According to Paul Turacayisenga, the acting Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines, the direct flights to Mombasa will play a vital role in supporting thousands of Ugandan traders who rely on the Port of Mombasa for their business, as more than 85% of Uganda's imported cargo passes through the port.

"The 1 hour 50-minute flight trip will add value to travellers who previously spent over three to four hours flying from Entebbe with a connection in Nairobi to Mombasa," said Harvey Kalama, the airline's operations manager.

The flight, UR 342, which carried 76 passengers, marks the seventh route of the airline since its revival in April with the introduction of two Bombardier aircraft.

Uganda Airlines resumed full flight operations on August 27, 2019, and will operate direct flights to Mombasa three times a week, on Monday, Friday, and Sunday.

The airline has joined Rwanda's regional carrier, flying directly from Kigali to Mombasa.
