On November 12, 2019, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) faced public scrutiny over unpaid salaries for temporary staff who conducted the 2019 National Population and Housing Census.
According to KNBS, 13,428 enumerators, content supervisors, and ICT supervisors from four counties were left without payment.
Netizens took to social media to demand payment for the affected staff, coinciding with the presentation of the census results to President Uhuru Kenyatta on the same day.
KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi attributed the delay in payments to incorrect personal details provided by the affected individuals.
"We've had a number of payments returned as a result of either dormant accounts and/or wrong banking details," Mwangi explained.
As a solution, the agency has asked the unpaid staff to confirm their bank details with their County Statistic Officer (CSO) and return their gadgets in good working condition.
